Effect of antiepileptic drugs on bone metabolism in children using biochemical markers: a case control study

Background: Most epileptic patients are diagnosed and treated in childhood adolescence this period is crucial attaining peak bone mass. Few studies conducted on children showing long term effects of AEDs metabolism. So, the present study was to evaluate correlation long-term uses with changes metabolism using biochemical marker. Methods: Total 140 subjects divided into 70cases - Epileptic aged 1 14 years who for at least 6months 70 Controls- Children not AEDs. Semi structured questionnaire used collect demographic data. Venous blood samples were collected sent laboratory investigations like Serum vitamin D, serum calcium, phosphorus, Parathyroid hormone alkaline phosphatase levels. Results: Mean age population cases 7.74±4.43 controls was7.65±3.72 years. vitamin-D, phosphorus decreases while PTH ALP increases duration treatment a statistically significant difference between them (P<0.05). D level no statistical two groups. parathormone levels all had mean low enzyme inducing when compared non-enzyme drugs high monotherapy polytherapy Conclusions: Present shows that longer mineral parameters normal children. The emphasizes need be monitored as they higher risk falling fractures.
